VILLARS, SWITZERLAND - Let the train take the strain

by Louis Bignami

With its mountain railway and gentle low-altitude slopes, Villars is the kind of place that has been overshadowed by modern mega-resorts. But for a relaxing and varied family holiday the attractions are clear - and improved lifts and links with Les Diablerets have added to the appeal.

What's Great
What's Not-So-Great

+ By Swiss standards, Villars costs are low

+ Great resort for intermediate skiers

+ Perfect resort for families - The Swiss Federation of Tourism awarded Villars the "Families Welcome" designation

+ Great day excursion possibilities Limited apres-ski opportunities

- This isn't the kind of place that you ski to impress your friends

- It's a bit complicated to find the best black runs

- It has a rather short ski season (ending in early March)
